What is Operations Management?

Operations management is an area of business based around the production of goods – manufacturing, production planning and inventory are all part of operations management. The role of operations management is to ensure that the overall production process runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible, managing resources, dealing with suppliers and making sure that processes are effective and meet customer needs.

What is the IOM?

The IOM is the Institute of Operations Management. The IOM is a professional body formed in 1963 to represent the interests of those working in operations management. It also provides operations management qualifications to develop skills and knowledge in manufacturing and production planning.

What are IOM operations management qualifications?

IOM qualifications are designed to develop the skills needed to work in manufacturing, production planning or inventory. There are two levels of qualification; the Level 3 Certificate in Operations Management and the Level 5 Diploma in Operations Management:

Certificate in Operations Management:

The Certificate in Operations Management is designed for those who are new to operations management, or with some experience but no formal qualifications.

In the first unit, the IOM Level 3 looks at Business for Operations Managers. This unit looks at the business knowledge and understanding needed by those working in operations management. It looks at the general business structure and environment, as well as strategy, cost management and performance management.

The second unit looks at the supply chain, and how operations management can help to ensure that customer needs are met by managing stock and inventory control, planning manufacturing, managing purchasing and procurement and the distribution of products.

The third unit looks at business improvement techniques from the perspective of operations management, looking at different methods and techniques for bringing about improvements in processes and improving performance.

Diploma in Operations Management:

The Diploma in Operations Management is designed for those who already have experience of operations management, and are working in a management role in a relevant area.

The Diploma is a comprehensive operations management course made up of eight units plus a final workplace project, where the student will demonstrate his or her knowledge in a practical business setting. The course covers Operations Management Strategy, Operations Resource Management, Business excellence for operations managers, Customer focus in operations management, Supply chain and inventory management, Enterprise planning for operations managers, Manufacturing planning and Added value for manufacturing.

What jobs can I do with an operations management qualification?

Operations management offers a range of different job roles, and the role of operations manager can be very varied and touch upon a lot of different areas.

An operations manager’s role is to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the business, which could involve overseeing budgets, planning, purchasing and procurement, supply chain management and distribution. Knowledge of the supply chain and an understanding of purchasing are usually important, as are general management and leadership skills. There are different levels within operations management, from supervisors overseeing day-to-day operations right up to senior management positions concerned with shaping and implementing the overall business strategy.

Operations management positions are generally well-paid, with the average salary for an operations manager ranging from around £27,000 to £45,000 per year.
