It can be hard to know where to start when taking your initial steps into employment after working in the military. The great news is, during your time in service, you will have already gained a number of valuable skills that you can develop and utilise to start an exciting new career in Human Resources.
Here at Distance Learning Centre and Training (DLC), we are ready to help you take your next steps to a new career, with the help of the Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS), which provides financial support for ex-service people towards professional qualifications. Why use your ELCAS credits on HR qualifications?
Human Resources refers to all activity within a business that relates to its people, and is at the heart of how successful businesses run and thrive. This makes HR very flexible, and the work you’re doing one day is unlikely to be the same as the work you do the next. Some of the situations and tasks you’re likely to be involved with include working on employment contracts, training and inductions, supporting staff, managing recruitment and dismissals and creating processes and policies in-line with the needs of the business.
There are extensive career progression opportunities in HR, too. Roles start at assistant or administrator level, and can progress to senior management and director levels. This shows the true value of an HR career, as you can refine, develop and grow your existing skills and abilities gained in the military through further training and study.
How can you apply your military experience to an ELCAS HR course?
As you can see, Human Resources requires a diverse set of skills and abilities, that you are likely to have developed during your time in service. If you have been responsible for managing military personnel in any way, you already have an insight into what a career in HR could be like. If you can recall instances of working with military personnel to help them improve and develop, have had to manage performance, or are experienced with managing personnel data, you already have some of the fundamental abilities needed to get started in this exciting new career.
What HR courses are available at DLC?
Here at DLC, we provide accredited HR qualifications that are internationally recognised by the HR industry. These courses are provided by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the professional association for Human Resources Professionals.
You can choose to use your ELCAS credits towards a Level 3 Certificate in Human Resource Practice, or a Level 3 Diploma in Human Resource Practice, depending on how in-depth you would like to study during your military resettlement. Both courses help you to develop your existing skills in people management, employee relations and performance management, and result in an industry-recognised qualification.
If you are looking for a different career to HR, we also accept ELCAS credits on a number of our other professional courses, in subject areas including Management, Accounting and Logistics. Like our HR courses, these career paths offer a real opportunity to start an exciting new career that will last you a lifetime.
